This is my recommendation step-by-step progression for learning enrosques. It sounds like a lot of work but you theoretically could get a semi-functioning enrosque in a month if you work really hard. Go step-by-step, by super precise and super anal about every degree of movement in your body and yes, you will be able to pull one off. It’s hard work to learn but then really easy to do once you get the mechanics into your body.
1. Axis awareness
- Learn how to create a stacked line with a perfect axis. Nothing sticking out. Your head, shoulders, hips, knees, and feet are all in line.
2. Turning (and stopping) drills
- With your feet collected in various positions (side-by-side, front cross, back cross, etc), practice turning 1/4, then 1/2, then full turn.
- Also practice stopping with your lower body at different angles. Sometimes the lower body stops when it catches up to the upper body. Other times, the lower body spins past the upper body.
3. Styling drills
- Do all the various enrosque combinations.
4. Different entries and exits (with partner)
- With a partner, practice entering and exiting from different steps of her mollinete (forward, side, back), and also different enrosque combinations.
5. Musicality timing
- Practice entering the enrosque at different parts of the musical phrase. Enrosques are usually done on the melodic or lyrical parts of the music. Some dancers will start right as the melodic phrase begins, others will get into the enrosque a little earlier and shift into a fancy pose during the melodic phrase.
- The general idea is to try different musical timings with your enrosque to achieve a different visual effect.
