About Me (Johnny Nguyen)

What a joy it is to be wrong again and again as we re-discover the treasures right before us.

  1. First tango exposure watching my brother perform in 2006. It was fun but I never came back.
  2. My brother gets 3rd place at Tango Mundial in Buenos Aires in AUG 2011.
  3. Inspired by my brother and exploring non-boxing activities, I re-started tango again in SEP 2011 in Los Angeles.
  4. My first tango teachers were Naomi Hotta & Oxygen Tango, they’re not associated.
  5. I was ‘good for a beginner’…which means I was still pretty bad.
  6. Started a judgment-free “Beginner’s Practica” on Sundays at Oxygen.
  7. Moved to San Francisco in 2012 and got rejected by some of the nicest followers there.
  8. After some Gabriel Misse workshops, I fall in love with toe-walking and doing bad enrosques.
  9. Competed in the USA Tango Championship with 1.5 years experience and didn’t get past the first round.
  10. Enjoyed my first tango festival in Tucson dancing with strangers from all over.
  11. Went to BA for the first time and competed in the Tango Mundial with 2 years experience, I got 245th place or something like that.
  12. I stop toe-walking, except only when Misse is watching.
  13. Made the semi-finals of the USA Tango Championship in 2014.
  14. Danced in 20 countries in Europe.
  15. Moved back home in AUG 2014 into the “LA Tango House”.
  16. Had a truly magical eXperience at the 2015 San Diego Tango Festival.
  17. Made finals and got 3rd in the USA Tango Championship in 2015.
  18. Getting better at performing and now hate only 70% of my performance videos.
  19. The LA Tango House disbands in 2016.
  20. After winning 3rd place in the Vals and Milonga categories at the 2017 Southern California Tango Championship, I got invited to teach beginner classes at Oxygen Tango. The circle of life is complete.

Tango is all just a dream. But before you wake up, have fun!

Is it over already?
