Arm Energy – FAST vs SLOW movements

  • I imagine some leaders will use more energy to go fast and then less energy to go slow. (I do this to the extreme, even going completely dead/limp to lead slow movements. It’s very confusing for followers.)
  • Other leaders use intense energy to go slow and then completely release and open their chest or other area of the body to go “fast” kind of like letting go of the reins so the horse can run freely.

Either method is fine if that’s the non-verbal language you have with your partner. But if I had to choose, I would now say it’s better to always have energy in your arms. Energy is not the same as tension. Have energy, presence, passion in the arms. I would say you need a relaxed but vibrant amount of energy to lead fast movements and then an even more intense/passionate energy to lead slow movements!

So that’s it. Always having either “energy” or “MORE energy”. But you never go from “energy” to “less energy”. Never give less in tango, ok? (And for more clarification, think of energy as passion or expression and not as tension or strength!)
