The CHEST-PRESENCE Paradox

One of the most frustrating concepts to understand as a leader is how to give “chest presence” to the follower. Suppose you’re upright and your chest is puffed out (not excessively) like Superman. That looks great but then you’re not touching your follower…she can’t “feel” your presence.

Ok…so now tilt your upper body slightly so that your chest invades her space a bit. This is closer, this looks nice, feels nice. BUT WAIT….

Your follower might complain now that she STILL can’t “feel” your presence and also that your chest is caved since you’re leaning forward.

So what do you do? My best guess so far:

  • Stay on your own axis, keep your head tall and straight up, shoulders and frame as wide as possible….and bring her to you.
  • If she won’t come to you…try shifting your weight slightly towards the front of your feet, activating your calves and quads in the most relaxed (not disengaged) manner possible and get her to do the same.
  • Push her chest with your “presence” rather than a physical mechanical push. Also, when you push her chest…make sure it affects/pushes her entire body (hips & feet), not only her torso.
